2004 Honda Odyssey; alloy wheels are peeling off a thin clear film. Help!?
I recently washed my Odyssey and when I was washing the tires, I saw a bubbled up area on the alloy wheel cover. I realized that it was water under a thin clear layer of film. All 4 wheel covers have signs of this peeling. Any ideas what I can do?
Yes, but it involves lots of elbow grease. You could take a washtub, 5 gallons of acetone, and medium steel wool and get to work. Have the tire dismounted first, place wheel in tub, pour in enough acetone to cover wheel and wait overnight. put a cover over tub to slow evaporation. You
can then strip the clear-coat with the steel wool.
This is very flamable and fumes are intoxicating and dangerous, so be sure & have ventilation. Rubber gloves are optional.
It is work, but if I had known this trick in boot-camp, life in the corps would have been a lot easier. We had to strip lacquer off of lots of brass buy hand, and that is what you are attempting to do, only it is aluminum. This method the cost will be $50-75 total for all 4 wheels.
The only other option I know would be to have them bead blasted with plastic beads, but it would cost a couple hundred.
Neither method figures the cost for mount/dismount/balance.
Good Luck
